Lt General Joseph Boateng Danquah was born 7 July 1947. He enlisted in the Ghana Military Academy and was commissioned as an Infantry Officer into the Ghana Army on 14 December 1969.
Lt Gen JB Danquah attended all relevant basic Infantry Officers Courses between 1970 and 1977. He had his Junior Staff Course at the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College from September to December 1981 and proceeded to Jaji, Kaduna in Nigeria where he attended the Senior Command and Staff Course from September 1984 to August 1985.
Lt Gen Danquah also attended the International Military Course on Law of Armed Conflict in Italy, in 1995, the Senior International Defence Management Course, Monterey, California, USA in 1998 and the National War College in Nigeria from September 1998 to July 1999.
Lt Gen Danquah held various military appointments including Commanding Officer Third Infantry Battalion, Four Training Battalion, Director Army Operations, Assistant Commandant, Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College (Junior Division) as well as the Chief Staff Officer, Army Headquarters from August 1999 to March 2001. He also served as the General Officer Commanding the Southern Command of the Ghana Army from March 2001 to 20 May 2005, a position he held until his appointment as the Chief of the Defence Staff of the Ghana Armed Forces.
Lt Gen Danquah has an extensive peacekeeping experience. He was the Commanding Officer for the Second Ghana Battalion serving with the ECOWAS Ceasefire Monitoring Group (ECOMOG) in Liberia from October 1990 to June 1991.
With respect to United Nations Peacekeeping Operations he served in UNIFIL, South Lebanon in various capacities as Company Commander, Ghanbatt 13, from May to December 1980, Second-in-Command Ghanbatt 20, from June 1983 to January 1984 and finally as Commanding Officer Ghanbatt 36 from September 1991 to April 1992.
In recognition of his contribution towards peace in Liberia, he was awarded the DISTINGUISHED SERVICE ORDER (DSO) by the Ghana Government in January 2001.
Lt Gen Danquah was appointed CDS in 2005 and relinquished the appointment on 28 January 2009. |
