The President of Liberia, Mrs Helen Johnson Sirleaf, has lauded the Ghana Armed Forces’ contribution towards sustaining peace and stability in her country. President Sirleaf acknowledged the great sacrifice exhibited by personnel of the GAF during and after the war that has brought peace to Liberia. She said the GAF has since continued to ensure Liberia’s peace in its participation of peacekeeping mission in the country. The President made these remarks when she laid a wreath at the Peacekeepers’ Memorial in Burma Camp on Saturday February 20, 2010 in honour of peacekeepers that lost their lives while on duty in Liberia. On parade to mark the occasion were three officers, 111 ratings under the command of Lt (GN) JE Barns and the Armed Forces Central Band. Speaking at the ceremony, the Liberian President stated that Liberia’s peace would always be remembered or Liberians for the sacrifice by the gallant and brave Ghanaian Soldiers save them from calamity. President Sirleaf said the prosperity and sustained peace Liberia is enjoying today has been the selfless devotion of the gallant officers and men of the GAF and hoped the good will showed by Ghanaians would be maintained. She commended the departed souls who have demonstrated the good sacrifice of ‘a brother’s keeper’ and remarked, “the healthy relations between Ghana and Liberia would continue to grow”. In attendance, were the Minister for Defence, Lt Gen JH Smith (rtd), The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Alhaji Mohammed Mumuni, Minister of Trade and Industries, Ms Hannah Tetteh, as well as the Foreign Affairs and Defence Ministers of Liberia and Senior Officers of the Ghana Armed Forces. |
