|PROFILE OF REAR ADMIRAL GM BIEKRO CHIEF OF THE NAVAL STAFF|
Rear Admiral Geoffery Mawuli Biekro was born on 28 August 1952 at Dodome in the Volta Region. He was commissioned into the Ghana Navy as an Executive Officer on 20 December 1975 after his basic training at the Ghana Military Academy, Teshie and the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, United Kingdom (UK).
He has attended various specialised military and civil courses. Notable among the military courses are the International Midshipmen and International Sub-Lieutenants Technical Courses at the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, and School of Maritime Operations in Portsmouth, both in the UK. He also attended the Junior Staff Course (1985) and Senior Command and Staff Course (1988/89), both at the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College (GAFCSC). He emerged the Best Naval Student at the Senior Command and Staff Course at GAFCSC.
Rear Admiral Biekro also attended the Nasser Military Academy and High War College in Egypt in 2005 where he obtained a Diploma in Strategic Studies.
He pursued the Master of Arts (MA) and Master of Philosophy (M Phil) Degree programmes in Development Studies at the University of Ghana, Legon (2002-2004). He also attended the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), between 1990 and 1992, and obtained a Post-Graduate Diploma in Public Administration with distinction. He also holds a First Class Bachelor of Science Degree in Management Studies from the Pacific Southern University in California, USA, a Diploma in Christian Counselling from the International Theological Seminary, USA, and LLB (Hons) Degree from the University of Ghana Law School. He is presently pursuing the Barrister at Law Programme (Post LLB Professional Course) at the Ghana School of Law.
Rear Admiral Biekro has served onboard several Ghana Navy Ships as Watch-keeping Officer, Executive Officer and Commanding Officer. He was also Directing Staff (Lecturer) at the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College and the Command and Staff College, Jaji, Nigeria. He also served as the Military Assistant to the General Officer Commanding the Ghana Armed Forces and Chief of the Defence Staff from 1992 to 1996, Director Naval Training (2000-2002) and Chief Staff Officer, both at the Naval Headquarters.
Rear Admiral Biekro participated in the 18th Sea Power Symposium (Conference of the Chiefs of Navies Worldwide) at the Naval War College, Rhode Island, USA, in October 2007 as a resource person where he presented a well researched paper on the topic “The Concept of Global Fleet Station in Relation to the Economic Security and Solutions in the Gulf of Guinea.”
He also presented a paper on the Maritime Security Challenges of Ghana at the African Centre for Strategic Studies Workshop held in Accra in 2006 and another paper at the first ever International Oil and Gas Seminar at GIMPA in Ghana.
Prior to his appointment as the Chief of the Naval Staff, he was the Chief of Staff at the General Headquarters of the Ghana Armed Forces. He therefore comes into his new appointment fully prepared and qualified.
Rear Admiral Geoffrey Mawuli Biekro is married and has four children. His hobbies include jogging and listening to Gospel Music.
