Military-Police to draft Standing Operating Procedures for joint operations. (SOP’s)

26 June 2012.  The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) and Ghana Police Service (GPS) have established a joint Military-Police Committee to draft Standing Operating Procedures (SOP’s) for joint military and police internal operations.

According to the Chief of Staff (COS), General Headquarters, Cdre Geoffrey Mawuli Biekro, this step was as a result of recommendations from a Ministerial Committee which was set up a few years ago to investigate disturbances between individual policemen and soldiers.

He noted that the Committee among other recommendations suggested that there was the need for efficient collaboration and cooperation between military and police personnel during joint operations.

He added that the top hierarchy of the GAF and Police Service believed that in addition to other necessary measures, these SOP’s would greatly improve both personal and working relations between the two groups.

The COS pointed out that the military and police were very key agencies of the security establishment in the country and therefore should work together to preserve the peace of the country and make it a secured environment especially in the upcoming general elections.

“We also expect that the SOPs will lay down concrete framework for the maintenance of conducive and peaceful  environment in the country, as military and police personnel operate effectively, efficiently and harmoniously together,” he noted.

Cdre Biekro seized the opportunity to appeal to members of the public to desist from drawing wedges between the two establishments or overblowing such infractions. “These tendencies do not augur well for the peace we must all maintain and which must prevail throughout the country,” he emphasised.

The conference was attended by the Director General Joint Operations at GAF General Headquarters, Brig Gen Dan Kwaku Mishio, Director General Operations of the Police Service, COP John Kudalor and other officers from the Army, Navy, Air Force and the Police Service.
